Early Sneakers, Munich
We used to kick a ball around on the playground and have a secret smoke behind the sports hall. We fell in love for the first time and then danced all night. And while we were doing all these things, we would wear Adidas Superstars and Air Jordans. We never took them off, except perhaps at bed time – occasionally. Now that we’ve grown up, we’ve got our own kids, and we’re hoping they’ll follow in our footsteps one day.
It’s of course up to us to decide who will follow in whose footsteps, but there’s a shop that provides the right footwear for this purpose: Daniel and Maja’s Early Sneakers. The small shop is situated in a little side street, not far from the hustle and bustle of Munich’s Viktualienmarkt where you can still experience the city in all its quaintness. Their shop window is adorned with graffiti-style kitchen tissues, hand-painted by the creative brain at Early Sneakers, Marc Achmüller. You can feel that everything is genuine here, and everything is different and casual. Inside: parquet floor, vaulting horses and boxes and indeed entire shelves of sporting apparatus. Above, below and in between – sneakers everywhere, wherever you look. In all, there are 13 different brands in 25 different sizes. The smallest sneakers are size 1, still without proper heels and barely larger than the palm of a hand, and the largest are young people’s shoes, size 8. But the main focus is on the little ‘uns. What Maja and Daniel want to achieve with their Early Sneakers is simply that our children should be just as casual as we are. “We sell a lifestyle”, says Daniel. This is borne out by the neon colours of the small sneakers on their hand-made shelves. “We want our décor to create connections – between kids and parents and between past and present. We want adults to feel that they’ve travelled back into their childhood,” says Maja as she describes the general principle behind the interior decorating. And it works. The shop really conveys that perfect feeling of the “skating shoes generation”. Early Sneakers is exactly the right place for anyone wanting to walk around with their juniors in a cool partner outfit – and for anyone who simply wants to pass on a certain lifestyle.
