Spring-Summer 2011 – Top Ten Trends for Buyers
taken from TextilWirtschaft talk at 10 September 2010

1. The used look
One of the biggest trends next year is going to be the used look. Out with the new, in with the old; designers are going for boldly distressed items mixed with functional, ‘work’ or vaguely military-style clothes – i.e. cargos and work trousers. Jackets are bulky, substantial and should tell a story, looking as if they have been worn for years.

Shoes should match. Look out for deck shoes and slip-ons in canvas, for her with open toes or straps. For him, boots are the order of the day, either work-boots or, for a slightly more adventurous look, long and pointed. For both sexes, canvas colours and washed leather are the materials of choice.

2. Upper casual
Especially for the guys, the slob look is most definitely out. Forget the jogging bottoms that were omnipresent until now; casual is going back upscale, and in 2011, guys will be looking well-dressed. Fabrics will be light, but sharp, and cuts perhaps more tailored.
Shoes to match this are light and summery. Despite the up-dressing, laces are still rare; men will be looking for loafers that are neatly cut but in comfortable soft leather. Towards the end of the season, the more adventurous guys might even start looking at tassles; women too.

3. New new romantic
A big trend in 2011 is going to be a return to romanticism. This means decoration and adornment, slashes and visible seams. Women will be wearing big jewellery. Less obvious for him, but nevertheless not without effect for men (decorative buttons, etc).
She will be looking for shoes that look like they’re are from an arts and crafts store: details are important. Slightly ethnic-looking sandals in warm leather tones will be in, decorated in places and perhaps even in combination with wood. Nevertheless, buyers should confuse this home-made ethnic look with dress-down: shoes will still need to look solid and well-made.

4. Colonial
It’s a big trend every summer, but hasn’t been seen in this measure for a while. We are looking at the usual mix of safari and military clothing, colours are greens, beiges, camels and khakis. The twist this time round is that colonial is going upmarket: it’s smarter and more elegant than usual.
In terms of shoes, buyers should be looking at velour materials for men and crepes for women.

5. Blue
2011 is going to be the year where blue really makes its mark; there will be a lot of it, and will be frequently quite bright. Blue often leaves out shoes, but not this year: there will be blue velour loafers for him; perhaps not for her, though.

6. Light
A trend that should become more pronounced towards the end of the season is light, non-colours. We will be looking at off-whites, beiges, stone-washed style colours; especially in loafers for the guys and pumps for the girls, this will be pick up speed as summer 2011 goes on.

7. Legs
In recent years, women have been showing off their stomachs; now, the focus will shift to their legs. There will be a continuation of the short-shorts trend with lots of flesh on show, as well as the more conservative variant in terms of tight trousers or knee-length skirts.
This means that she will be looking for higher heals to really lengthen her legs. For flat-shoe wearers, there will be decidedly girly-style pumps and sandalettes.

8. Dresses
For her, 50s-style one-piece dresses with tight waists and fabric down to just above the knees will be a growing trend. To avoid looking too old-fashioned, however, these will need to be paired with higher-heels. Once again, buyers should go higher.

9. Chinos
Both guys and girls will be wearing light chinos, often rolled up. For him, this means loafers: for her, the chino look of summer 2011 will involve sandals with heals (especially roman-style), and perhaps even very pointy dancing shoes for the more adventurous.

10. Cooler business
Whilst casual for men is going upscale, business is coming back down. Spring-summer 2011 will be less about sharp and smart and more about relaxed and cool. Shoes to match this trend will be monks with straps and buckles and velour loafers.
