Passageways in pale marble, spread-out glazed façades and a perfectly coordinated colour scheme composed of finest nuances of the black and white spectrum. Those entering Davids’ flagship store on Bloor Street in Toronto, enter a retail store of sublime elegance.
Established in 1951 the third-generation family business in Canada has specialised in selling a select range of luxury shoes, designer bags and accessories and excels at staging its exclusive ranges correspondingly.
The entrance concourse is dominated by a glass centrepiece decorated with a lavish violet orchid arrangement – the display area for special eye-catchers in the new range. “Enthroned” here are creations by the “grand masters” Christian Louboutin, Jimmy Choo and Louis Vuitton alongside designs by the likes of Michael Kors, Walter Steiger and Emilio Pucci. Every shoe displayed here finds its place on a transparent acrylic glass installation.
Stylish seating with shiny grey upholstery and a Chesterfield-look futon unobtrusively blend with the elegant store concept inviting shoppers to try on and while away their time.
Racks in brushed stainless steel with glass shelves present Valentino’s eccentric creations in black and red. Starring in the next compartment: René Caovilla’s Swarovski-studded red-carpet styles. And in the following compartment: blue Manolo’s, the pumps that Sarah Jessica Parker wore in the “Sex and the City” movie.
A spiral staircase leads up to the second floor – the men’s department. Here designs of such renowned houses as Salvatore Ferragamo, Hugo Boss and Timberland rub shoulders with each other. The range is complemented by selected accessories and up-market gift items.
Explaining Davids’ diversity of merchandise CEO David Makrowitz explains: “Our biggest strength is our knowledge of the Canadian market. Be it avant-garde, classic or luxurious – we offer each one of our customers matching footwear.”
Incidentally, the extraordinary store concept results from the creative cooperation between the founding family Markowitz and the multi-national design office Burdifilek. The interior design is based on a simple principle: “Regardless of whether it is the range or the interior design – we always offer our shoppers the best of the best, “says David Makrowitz. This principle of the tradition-rich company has already rewarded Davids with a number or successes including the World’s Best Shoe Store, selected by the editors of the international trade magazine “Footwear News”.
