Foot candy for shoe freaks
What brightly coloured candy is to kids KronKron is to Icelandic fashionistas. The multi-brand store on Reykjavik’s main shopping mile makes eyes shine, hearts beat faster and brings a smile to every woman’s face. “Not for nothing are we known as the candy factory even beyond the city’s borders,” explains store manageress Sissa with a wink. The secret of success? “KronKron is neither a top-heavy concept nor does it follow a strictly calculated marketing plan. KronKron is a world full of radiant dashes of colour and a good deal of fun - truly a land of milk and honey when it comes to fashion, shoes and accessories.”
The winning combination of flamboyant ranges and colourful interior design never fails to cast a spell on passers-by. Turquoise-plastered walls clash with yellow and orange lintels. Violet cladding radiates competing with pink changing rooms. Everything is garish, eccentric and colourful – a shoe store as sweet as a sugar factory. Even the goods display is reminiscent of the ranges on show at a colourful candy store. High-gloss, black-lacquered benches stand in deep windows offering finely woven knee-highs with a star print.
Right next to them Henrik-Vibskov sunglasses vie for attention with a pair of bright red rubber boots by Sonia Rykiel. A 90° turn will reveal a very special feast for the eyes. In a pigeon-hole type wall display bird-feather look peep-toe wedges by Japanese designer Tsumori Chisato are ”enthroned” over ultra-hip bast flats bearing the Spanish Castaner label. Right next to them – the absolute highlight of the store – tightly aligned coloured wooden planks resting on fine pebble and leading up to an extra-large mirror like a catwalk. Slightly “panning” to the right an impressive roundabout rises up – the presentation area for the centrepieces of the range: Kron by KronKron. Be it trendy wedge-heel shoes, striking high-block heels or classic ankle boots – the creations of the designer and store owner husband and wife team Hugrún Árnadóttir and Magni Þorsteinsson are more imaginative, colourful and eccentric than anything ever seen before, featuring bows, patent elements or a mix of materials. And this design idea has hit Reykjavik’s fashion scene like a bomb.
The ranges for men are also as colourful as pick ’n’ mix lucky bags including both local Scandinavian designers and multinational labels.
